Introduction to this document
Quick guide to safety sign design
To alert employees and others to hazards in the workplace, safe routes to fire exits, etc. you must follow standard rules on the colour and shape of signs. Our document provides an easy guide to what’s needed.
Using the guide
Requirements for the colour, shape and design of safety signs are set out in Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 (SSSR). To assist you in choosing and designing signs which meet the SSSR we’ve put together a Quick Guide to Safety Sign Design.
The guide is illustrated with examples of the four main categories of sign:
- prohibition
- mandatory
- warning; and
- safe condition (including emergency equipment).
It also covers the standards to use for pipe markings, floor markings and traffic routes.
