Introduction to this document

Work equipment - safe system of work - hand tools

If your staff operate hand tools, use our document to clarify the safe systems of work to be followed. What’s covered?

Formalise your position

Although the associated risks are relatively low, if staff use hand tools, such as screwdrivers, hammers, snips, knives, etc., it won’t hurt to clarify how you want them to be operated. For example, a screwdriver is for its intended use only and not to be used as a hammer.

Liability

Although it might seem unnecessary, we think it’s a worthwhile exercise, as it will provide you with a formal training record and signed agreement on the safe systems of work to be followed. This could help to reduce any potential liability in the event of an accident.

What’s covered?

In the first part of the document identify the tools covered by your document. We have provided space to include a picture of the tools, but just a list will be fine. Next, the document identifies the “Key instructions for safe use”. There are five in total. Finally, there is a training record. Here the individual receiving the training and the trainer should sign to confirm that the session has been completed.
