Summary of principal designer’s responsibilities
The principal designer (PD) is appointed by a construction client when a project will involve more than one contractor. The individual or organisation takes overall responsibility for health and safety during the pre-construction phase of the project.

Our Summary of Principal Designer’s Responsibilities explains the duties of the PD under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. The PD has an important role in assimilating information which is relevant to the site and ensuring that it is taken into account during the scheduling of the project. They must also reduce risks through the design process and ensure that other designers do the same. The PD is also responsible for the health and safety file.
