Introduction to this document
Confined spaces policy
If your staff or contractors work in confined spaces, use our policy to explain the risks and how they are controlled.
What’s covered?
The document begins with a definition of “confined spaces”, i.e. that these can be places with restricted access, fire and explosion hazards, toxic or oxygen deficient atmospheres, areas where you could drown or become trapped in a free flowing solid, or where heat stress could be an issue.
It describes the legal position and the responsibilities of employers. Plus, it covers risk control measures you should instigate if confined space working can’t be avoided. These include risk assessments, permits to work, staff training, signage, emergency plans, competent supervision, etc.
The final section explains the responsibilities of employees and their supervisors.
