Flow chart - asbestos management

If you own or manage premises, you have a duty to ensure that staff and others are not exposed to asbestos. Our flow chart shows you what steps are legally required when managing this risk.

Legal duty

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR) state that those with responsibility for the management of “non-domestic” premises must ensure that asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are properly controlled. This means identifying the materials, assessing the risks and putting in place a plan to manage them.

Our flow chart is based on the requirements of the CAR so by following it you’ll be able to ascertain what documents you need to have in place and more.

What’s covered?

You might have a duty to manage asbestos because you own a building or have a repair and maintenance responsibility under a lease or contract.

Follow the steps and answer the questions until you reach the end of the flow chart where you’re instructed to keep your documents up to date. In between you will have worked through the identification of ACMs, carrying out a risk assessment, taking remedial action as necessary, and ensuring ongoing management and monitoring. You will then be prepared in case of accidental disturbance.
