Introduction to this document

Flow chart - does COMAH apply?

If you handle, process or store flammable or toxic substances, you have a duty to ensure that staff and others are not exposed to harm from their accidental release. Our flow chart shows you what steps are required to determine whether you fall under the requirements of the legislation.

Legal duty

The Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 2015 (COMAH) apply to businesses that handle certain hazardous substances or undertake certain hazardous activities.

The purpose of COMAH is to prevent major accidents involving dangerous substances and limit the consequences to people and the environment of any accidents which do occur by implementing defined levels of control.

What’s covered?

You might have certain duties under COMAH depending on the substances you handle, and the properties and quantities of those substances.

Follow the steps to the end of the flow chart where it will inform you whether COMAH applies to you and, if so, which level of controls you need to apply.
