Introduction to this document

Small contractor appraisal questionnaire

Before employing a contractor for the first time, you need identify that they’re set up to manage safety risks. Our document will help you to do this.

Limited arrangements

If you employ contractors with fewer than five members of staff, they’re unlikely to have much in the way of paperwork. In the eyes of the law this is absolutely fin. However, if you’re considering using their services, this makes it hard for you to identify whether they have appropriate arrangements in place to manage the health and safety risks. With this in mind, we have developed a Small Contractor Appraisal Questionnaire.

Cut down

The first part asks the contractor to identify who is ultimately responsible for managing health and safety, prove that they have appropriate insurance cover in place and provide references for their work.

Change of tack

The document then takes a different approach. Rather than asking for the contractor to prove their competence by supplying copies of risk assessments etc., it asks them to confirm that they have taken appropriate steps to manage the risks.

Back-up evidence

The document then asks for copies of training certificates and licences which, even though the contractor is small, is something that they should be able to produce.
