Gritting plan

If your premises has external areas, then you need to be prepared for snow and ice. Use our gritting plan to set out your arrangements.

Why do you need it?

If you don’t have a plan for ice and snow, then there could well be accidents and injuries. You may also receive claims for compensation. Having an effective plan will not only reduce the chance of an accident, it will also make it much more likely that you’ll be able to defend a claim.

The insurance industry has found that the best way to manage these risks is to have a documented gritting plan. This will enable you to direct your staff and resources in the most efficient way. For example, by identifying and cordoning off uncleared areas you can target your efforts at the priority parts of the car park, entrance, ramps, steps, etc.

You should update the plan as you learn more, particularly at the end of the winter. But keep a copy of each version of your plan for at least three years. It may be needed as evidence to show that you did what was reasonable in the circumstances.
