Safety briefing - metalworking fluids

Metalworking fluids (MWFs) are lubricants used when drilling or shaping metal components. They seem innocuous enough so staff may underestimate the risks. Use our briefing to keep them safe.

What’s the hazard?

MWFs are held in a reservoir and circulated through the machine, discharging at the cutting tool and collected and recirculated. The initially clean substance gradually collects particles of metals, other contaminants such as hydraulic oil, and may become colonised by bacteria and fungi.

It’s important that staff have a basic understanding of the risks of working with MWFs in order that they can implement sensible precautions. To achieve this you can deliver a short instruction session using our Safety Briefing - Metalworking Fluids.

Our briefing is set out on a single page and begins with a short paragraph which explains that this will cover handling and disposing of MWFs. The hazards are then listed in section two, such as contact with the skin and inhalation. The control measures remind staff to follow the instructions given regarding maintenance of the machines, wearing personal protective equipment and washing regularly to remove MWFs from skin.
